WHY PEACE WILL NOT PREVAIL
The Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, yesterday called upon all nations to unite to combat the unrest in Syria. Syria is as likely to become peaceful as Iraq, Afghanistan, The Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or Israel-Palestine, even if Assad may fall from power.
We live in an a-historical world with a very short and ethno centrical perspective. To put it bluntly, we are naive and ignore historical and essential demographical facts.
Syria, Iraq and Turkey have housed great empires, such as Babylonia, Assyria (the Akkadic Kingdom) Mesopotamia and the Ottoman Empire. The region, however, rests, since 6000 B.C. and earlier, on clan organized Nomad patterns of life, as do Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Northern Africa, except for Egypt, the Sudan and Somalia, inter alia.
